Happy Sakada Day! The first Filipinos to arrive on Lānaʻi came in 1923 via other Hawai’i plantations as workers. In 1946, the last major immigration of Filipinos during this time came to Hawai‘i on the S.S. Maunawili . This is generally what they call the Sakada, and a number of Filipino families on Lāna‘i descend from this period. On Lānaʻi, the Sakadas contributed not only to the island’s economy but also to its vibrant cultural diversity, blending their traditions with those of other immigrant groups. #lanaichc #lanaihawaii #SakadaDay #filipinohistory
Did you know about the 201-day plantation strike? During the 1951 strike, our Lānaʻi community worked together to support one another, including through fishing, gardening, and hunting. By the end of the strike, workers won the right to purchase their homes and better wages. Lānaʻi people who came before us laid the foundation for our community. In October, our Lānaʻi CHC team hosted an interactive booth at a STEAM Night conducted by LHES Foundation for keiki. Students engaged in hands-on learning, including observing different types of limu under magnifying glasses and microscopes. They also collaborated to illustrate a healthy, diverse reef ecosystem. Experiences like this help equip students with valuable skills, empowering them to become the next generation of leaders and ʻāina stewards. Waiaʻōpae is a loko iʻa on our eastern shores that once served as a sustainable source of food for many Hawaiians who resided on Lānaʻi. It is our hope that restoring the loko i‘a and the uplands above it is more than preserving history—it’s about supporting native biodiversity, fostering food security, and passing on lessons of balance and sustainability to future generations. Join us this Saturday as we aloha ʻāina, conducting shoreline stewardship, marine debris cleanup, and removing kiawe around the camp area at Waiaʻōpae.
