Kupulau Festival Celebrates Conservation
May 2023 – Lāna‘i Culture & Heritage Center hosted its second annual Kupulau Festival—a joyful celebration of the island’s natural and cultural treasures. The event featured educational booths where attendees learned about Lāna‘i’s unique biocultural landscape. These exhibits highlighted the deep connection between native plants and Hawaiian traditions.
Families took part in interactive crafts designed for all ages. Many also had the chance to take home native plants to grow in their own gardens. These hands-on activities made learning both fun and memorable.
Importantly, the timing of the festival aligned with the spring season and the end of Native Hawaiian Plant Month. As a result, it was the perfect time to honor the cultural significance of Hawai‘i’s native flora. Participants gained a deeper understanding of how native plants support Hawaiian culture—from medicine and craftsmanship to spiritual practices.
This year’s event would not have been possible without generous support from Pūlama Lāna‘i, Hālau Kū Māna, and many dedicated community volunteers. Thanks to their efforts, the festival offered a meaningful experience that strengthened appreciation for the island’s environment and heritage.
Moving forward, the Lāna‘i Culture & Heritage Center invites both residents and visitors to support its mission. Donations of any amount help sustain programs like the Kupulau Festival and other cultural initiatives. Every contribution, big or small, makes a lasting impact.
