Celebrating Earth Week at the 4th Annual Kupulau Festival

May 2025 - The Lānaʻi Culture & Heritage Center proudly celebrated its 4th Annual Kupulau Festival on April 26. The event invited families, students, and community members to enjoy a day filled with culture, learning, and aloha. As part of the 2025 Earth Week Kupulau Festival, the Center brought the event to life with generous support from KS Kaiāulu, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and Pūlama Lānaʻi. To kick off the celebration, Ke Kula Kaiapuni ʻO Lānaʻi opened with a powerful oli (chant). It set the tone for a culturally rich experience. Soon after, Nā Hula O Laʻikealoha then performed hula, while Saul Kahihikolo provided live music. Meanwhile, keiki eagerly joined hands-on activities such as making pa‘i ‘ai (pounded taro) and creating Hawaiian crafts. At the same time, organizations like the Hawaiʻi Nature Center and DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources hosted educational booths. These booths showed their their shared dedication to environmental restoration and cultural preservation.

In addition to the booths and performances, the festival highlighted ʻāina-based education initiatives. Throughout the year, students of all ages showcased their learning through art displays, presentations, and plant giveaways. For example, seniors introduced their capstone projects focused on native plants. Keiki proudly shared their drawings of endemic species. Moreover, lementary students gave away over 200 seedlings and plants, including longan, Thai chili peppers, and beets.

Throughout the day, families explored hands-on activities and conservation exhibits. They also enjoyed cultural storytelling accompanied by hula. As a result, these meaningful moments deepened their appreciation for Lānaʻi’s ecosystem and cultural legacy.

To end the event, the Lānaʻi Culture & Heritage Center shared a heartfelt mahalo. The team thanked everyone who joined, contributed, or helped make the festival a success. Looking ahead, they are excited for next year’s Kupulau Festival, set for April 25, 2026. Be sure to check the LCHC website Events section for future updates.
