Hawaiian Artifacts Preservation Project
November 2023 – Lāna‘i Culture & Heritage Center (Lāna‘i CHC) recently launched E Mālama i ke Koehana Waiwai o Lāna‘i (to care for the valuable artifacts of Lāna‘i). This is a two-and-a-half-year project. Its goal is to preserve and honor native Hawaiian artifacts.
Lāna‘i CHC stewards the world’s largest collection of Lāna‘i-focused archival materials. These collections cover the island’s history from traditional Hawaiian times through the ranching and plantation eras to today.
Thanks to funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services Program grant, the project inventories and catalogs over 2,500 Hawaiian artifacts. It also begins digitizing these items.
The project also includes key environmental upgrades. These upgrades ensure the cultural treasures remain properly stored and protected for future generations.
Overall, this initiative strengthens efforts to safeguard Lāna‘i’s rich heritage.
