Hiʻi: Preserving an Ancient Agricultural Site on Lāna‘i
March 2024 – On Saturday, March 16, Lāna‘i Culture and Heritage Center led a group of volunteers to an ancient agricultural site. Hiʻi is located about two miles from Koele.
For the past nine years, the center’s volunteers have worked to protect and preserve this site. It includes an ancient heiau and remnants of traditional house sites. Since 2015, efforts have focused on removing introduced trees and clearing invasive plants. These actions help open up the canopy and restore the native understory.
This heiau was first documented in the 1920s during an archaeology study by Kenneth Emory, a visiting archaeologist. Later, in summer 2016, student participants in Lāna‘i CHC’s cultural literacy program remapped the area. Hiʻi is a place of great cultural significance. It sits on a terrace about 1,100 feet above sea level, on rich agricultural land once stewarded by native tenants.
Lāna‘i CHC continues to bring the community together to preserve and protect important cultural sites like Hiʻi across the island.
